Subject: Stop the Polluting of Stoney Creek
Dear Recipient,
I am writing to you today as I am concerned about a waterway in our community, Stoney Creek. Stoney Creek is a special place. It’s right on the border of Burnaby and Coquitlam, and it’s teeming with life. Stoney Creek is home to fish populations like the Western Brook Lamprey and Nooksack Dace, and it has one of the only remaining salmon runs in the area.
Stoney Creek is facing threats from development and urbanization that degrade water quality and threaten local fish and wildlife, including wild salmon.
I have seen articles about spewing sewage and developers in Coquitlam not doing their due diligence and cutting corners, allowing raw sewage and construction runoff to enter into Stoney Creek.
These issues have been getting local, national and international media attention. Everyone is shocked that raw sewage, concrete runoff and other pollutants flow directly into Canadian creeks that have salmon and endangered wildlife.
As our community’s elected representatives, you have the responsibility to stand up for Stoney Creek. We want
- A written commitment from the provincial government that they will be increasing fines for companies and developers found polluting Stoney Creek.
- Make the Stoney Creek trunk line a priority and move the commencement date forward (Starting in 2026 is not acceptable)
- A provincial enforcement report for Stoney Creek to be publicly shared.
Please do your part to ensure that development doesn’t continue to degrade our watershed and threaten local fish and wildlife.
